On this course you’ll learn how to design and exploit automation and robotic systems in a range of manufacturing and industrial applications. You’ll cover a wide range of core engineering subjects – including industrial automation, robotics, artificial intelligence and control systems – preparing you to apply them to any modern engineering industry.
How you learn

Work placements

You will have the opportunity to go on a work placement for up to 12 months. You are supported in finding placements and can apply for a vacancy as you would a job. There are dedicated sessions to support you in CV writing, interview skills and job applications. The placement starts during the summer of your second year and most are paid. The work placement is not guaranteed and you will be encouraged to be proactive in your placement search and the application process.

Work-based learning

An MSc project and dissertation can provide an opportunity for industrially-commissioned or industrially-based work at a high level. MSc projects carried out by part-time students are typically of significant importance to their companies, and can raise a student's profile in the organisation.

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

The course team provides you with a supportive and engaging learning environment throughout your studies.  You experience and engage in a variety of learning methods as you progress through the course. We have designed a balanced mix of activities to enable knowledge acquisition, ensure understanding and develop you as a professional. In addition to this you will also have access to a range of state-of-the art, dedicated laboratories and workshops.

This course is delivered face-to-face over three semesters - teaching is scheduled based on the length of your course and the academic calendar.

Work experience is embedded midway through your course. Your dissertation module will be submitted upon completion of your placement.

Equipment and facilities

You’ll learn through teaching in lectures, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions using Hallam’s specialist facilities at the Centre for Automation and Robotics Research, as well as the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering.

The virtual learning environment and industry-standard specialist software on this course includes:

Entry requirements

Normally one from • an honours degree (2.2 or above) in a science or engineering subject, • suitable professional qualifications in an engineering field • a degree in any discipline containing aspects relevant to automation and control engineering , plus at least one year of appropriate industrial experience • a diploma in a technological area, with at least three years of relevant experience International students India • a first class BE in a relevant discipline, or a good second class BE with a strong performance in mechanical and manufacturing subjects China • a four year Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline, with an overall average of at least 80 per cent or equivalent Other countries • a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject

Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.
